Kim
Kim, published in 1901, is Rudyard Kipling's novel of India. Kimball O'Hara, the orphaned son of an Irish soldier, runs wild in the streets of Lahore, brown as any native and known as the Little Friend of all the World. He attaches himself to a Tibetan lama searching for a sacred river and travels with him down the Grand Trunk Road, and at the same time is drawn into the Great Game, the secret contest between British and Russian agents along the northern frontier. Kipling's affection for the bazaars, railway carriages and hill roads of the country he grew up in fills every chapter. The book is both an adventure and a portrait of a divided boyhood. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
