The People of the Black Circle
The People of the Black Circle appeared in three installments of Weird Tales in 1934 and is one of the longer and most admired of Robert E. Howard's Conan stories. In the Himalayan-like kingdom of Vendhya the king is slain by sorcery, and his sister, the Devi Yasmina, seeks out Conan, now chief of the hill tribes of the Afghuli, to strike at the wizards of the Black Circle who did it. Kidnapping, a treacherous governor, a Turanian army, and a climb to the fortress of Yimsha, where the Black Seers wait, follow in rapid order. Howard's borrowings from the history and landscape of the North-West Frontier give the tale an unusual solidity for a work of sword and sorcery. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, with the first chapter free.
