Shadows in Zamboula
Shadows in Zamboula appeared in Weird Tales in 1935, one of the last Conan stories Robert E. Howard published before his death. Conan, passing through the desert city of Zamboula, ignores a warning not to sleep at the inn of Aram Baksh and discovers why: the innkeeper sells his guests to the city's cannibal slaves, who roam the streets after dark. Rescuing a woman named Zabibi from them, Conan is drawn into her plot against the priest Totrasmek and his temple of Hanuman, and then into a wrestling match with the strangler Baal-pteor. The night ends with a reckoning for the innkeeper. It is one of the more sardonic tales in the series. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, with the first chapter free.
