The North-West Amazons: Notes of some months spent among cannibal tribes
Thomas Whiffen, a British army captain, spent several months in 1908 and 1909 traveling among the Indigenous peoples between the Issa and Apaporis rivers in the northwest Amazon, a region including the Putumayo, where few outsiders had been. His book, published in 1915, describes the Boro, Witoto and neighboring groups: their houses, dress, food, weapons, hunting, music, dances, beliefs, ceremonies and the warfare and ritual cannibalism he reported among some of them. Appendices discuss physical characteristics and possible cultural links. Written in the language and assumptions of its time, it remains an early ethnographic record of peoples soon devastated by the rubber trade. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
