The Nine Days' Queen, Lady Jane Grey, and Her Times

by Richard Davey

About 10 h 28 min of reading26 chapters

Richard Davey's biography of Lady Jane Grey, edited by Martin Hume for a series of popular histories, appeared in 1909. Davey begins with the Grey family at Bradgate in Leicestershire and Jane's remarkable education, then places her within the rivalries of the Tudor court: the household of Katherine Parr, the ambitions of Thomas Seymour, the fall of the Duke of Somerset and the rise of John Dudley, Duke of Northumberland, who married her to his son Guildford. He follows the nine days of her reign in July 1553, the collapse of Northumberland's plans, her trial and her execution in February 1554. Davey writes with sympathy and vivid detail. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
