The Mind and the Brain
Being the Authorised Translation of L'Âme et le Corps
Alfred Binet, the French psychologist best remembered for the first practical intelligence test, published L'Âme et le corps in 1905; this authorized English translation appeared in 1907 in the International Scientific Series. His subject is the relation between mind and matter. In the first book he argues that our knowledge of external objects consists only of sensations and that the mechanical theories of physics are symbols rather than realities; in the later books he examines the nature of cognition and of sensation, the definitions of mind and matter offered by idealists, materialists and parallelists, and the possibility of a union between them. The argument is close and clear, and Binet is candid about what remains unresolved. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
