The Man of Genius

by Cesare Lombroso

About 8 h 49 min of reading31 chapters

Cesare Lombroso, the Italian physician and founder of criminal anthropology, argued in The Man of Genius that genius is closely related to madness and is a form of degenerative psychosis. This English edition appeared in the Contemporary Science Series edited by Havelock Ellis. Lombroso reviews the history of the idea, then gathers evidence from the lives of poets, artists, scientists and statesmen, looking at their physical traits, nervous disorders and eccentricities, the influence of climate, weather, race and heredity on genius, and the works of the insane. His method and many of his conclusions are now discredited, but the book is a revealing document of nineteenth-century science and its theories of degeneration. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
