The Life of Reason: The Phases of Human Progress

by George Santayana

About 20 h 49 min of reading62 chapters

The Life of Reason, published in five volumes between 1905 and 1906 and complete here, is the work that established George Santayana as a philosopher. Its subject is the career of human reason in the world: the slow emergence of a sense of nature, of objects, of other minds and of ideals from the flux of experience, and then the forms that rational life takes in society, in religion, in art and in science. Santayana is a naturalist who thinks religion false and poetry true, and his treatment of religion as imaginative expression rather than doctrine has been widely influential. It contains the much-quoted remark that those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, with the first chapter free.
