George Santayana (1863–1952) was born in Madrid, brought to Boston at the age of eight, and educated at Harvard, where he studied under William James and taught philosophy for more than twenty years. In 1912 a small inheritance allowed him to resign and return to Europe; he lived in Oxford, Paris and finally Rome, and he never took American citizenship. His works include The Sense of Beauty, the five-volume Life of Reason, Scepticism and Animal Faith, the four-volume Realms of Being, a best-selling novel, The Last Puritan, and three volumes of memoirs.
