The fourth and final volume of Albert J. Beveridge's Life of John Marshall, published in 1919, covers the chief justice's last two decades on the Supreme Court. Beveridge sets Marshall's work against the nationalism and financial chaos of the years after 1815, and gives a chapter each to the great cases: the Dartmouth College case on the sanctity of contracts, McCulloch v. Maryland on the powers of Congress, Gibbons v. Ogden, which freed interstate commerce from state monopolies, and the decisions on international law and the Cherokee. He describes Marshall's partnership with Joseph Story and his final conflict with Andrew Jackson and the states' rights movement. The biography won the Pulitzer Prize in 1920. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
