The Life of John Marshall, Volume 2: Politician, diplomatist, statesman, 1789-1801
Albert J. Beveridge, a former senator from Indiana, wrote a four-volume life of John Marshall that won the Pulitzer Prize for biography in 1920. This second volume covers the years from 1789 to 1801. It describes the impact of the French Revolution on American politics, Marshall's leadership of the Virginia Federalists and defense of Washington's administration, and his law practice in Richmond. The center of the book is his mission to France with Pinckney and Gerry, the confrontation with Talleyrand's agents known as the XYZ affair, and his triumphant return, followed by his term in Congress and his appointment as Chief Justice. Beveridge writes vividly and quotes the sources at length. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
