About 12 h 10 min of reading52 chapters

The third volume of Albert J. Beveridge's Life of John Marshall, published in 1919, covers the years 1800 to 1815, when Marshall as Chief Justice set the Supreme Court against the triumphant Jeffersonians. Beveridge describes the Republican assault on the judiciary, the reasoning and politics of Marbury v. Madison, the impeachment of Justice Samuel Chase, Marshall's work on his biography of Washington, the conspiracy of Aaron Burr and the treason trial at Richmond over which Marshall presided, and the land fraud case of Fletcher v. Peck. Written by a former senator with a politician's feel for conflict, the four-volume biography won the Pulitzer Prize and is still read for its narrative drive. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
