Albert J. Beveridge, a former senator from Indiana, set out to rescue John Marshall from the vague praise that surrounded him and to show the man behind the Chief Justice. This first volume of his four-volume biography, published in 1916, follows Marshall from his family's roots on the Virginia frontier through a backwoods education, service as an officer in the Revolutionary War, including the winter at Valley Forge, and his early years as a lawyer and member of the Virginia legislature. Beveridge also describes the isolation and distrust of government that marked American life in the 1780s, and closes with the hard-fought Virginia convention of 1788 that ratified the Constitution.
