The Illustrated Key to the Tarot: The Veil of Divination
The Illustrated Key to the Tarot, published in 1918 under the name of the Chicago occult publisher L. W. De Laurence, is a handbook to the seventy-eight cards of the tarot deck in the form designed by Pamela Colman Smith for A. E. Waite in 1909, whose text it closely follows. The first part introduces the trumps and the four suits and sketches the history of the cards; the second describes the inner symbolism of each of the twenty-two greater arcana and the pictures and meanings of the fifty-six lesser cards; the third explains their divinatory meanings, reversed and upright, and gives methods of laying out a reading. It became one of the most widely circulated tarot manuals in America. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
