The Hunting of the Snark: An Agony in Eight Fits
The Hunting of the Snark, published by Lewis Carroll in 1876, is a nonsense poem in eight parts called fits. A crew whose members all have names beginning with B, including a Bellman, a Butcher, a Beaver, a Banker and a Baker who has forgotten his own name, set sail with a blank map to hunt a creature called the Snark, armed with thimbles, forks, hope and soap. They are warned that if the Snark turns out to be a Boojum, the hunter will softly and suddenly vanish away. Carroll said the last line came to him first, while he was out walking, and he always refused to say what the poem meant.
