Symbolic Logic

by Lewis Carroll

About 4 h 04 min of reading75 chapters

Charles Dodgson, writing as Lewis Carroll, published the first part of Symbolic Logic in 1896, intending it for young readers and anyone willing to learn a new way of reasoning. He introduces things and their attributes, propositions and classes, and then a system of diagrams of his own invention for solving syllogisms and longer chains of reasoning called sorites. The method is rigorous, but the examples are pure Carroll: premises about lobsters, babies, sea serpents, hedgehogs and logicians lead to conclusions as absurd as they are valid. Hundreds of exercises with answers make the book both a genuine textbook and a collection of puzzles. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
