Sylvie and Bruno
Sylvie and Bruno, published in 1889, was Lewis Carroll's last novel and his most ambitious. Two stories run side by side: in Victorian England a narrator who drifts in and out of dreams follows the love story of a young doctor, Arthur, and Lady Muriel, with long conversations on religion, society and morals; in the fairy realms of Outland and Elfland, the children Sylvie and Bruno, whose father, the Warden, has been pushed aside by a scheming brother, wander through adventures full of nonsense, songs and wordplay, including the Mad Gardener's song. The mixture puzzled many readers, yet the book contains some of Carroll's most inventive comic writing and an unusual experiment with dream and reality.
