Lewis Carroll was the pen name of Charles Lutwidge Dodgson (1832–1898), an English mathematician who taught at Christ Church, Oxford, for most of his life. A deacon, a pioneering amateur photographer and the author of textbooks on logic, he is remembered for two children's books, Alice's Adventures in Wonderland (1865) and Through the Looking-Glass (1871), for the nonsense poems they contain, and for The Hunting of the Snark. The Alice books began as a story told on a boating trip to the three daughters of the college dean, one of whom, Alice Liddell, asked him to write it down. He kept the two halves of his life firmly apart.
