The History of Prostitution: Its Extent, Causes, and Effects throughout the World
The History of Prostitution, published in 1858, began as an official report by William W. Sanger, resident physician of the Blackwell's Island penitentiary hospital, to the governors of New York's almshouses. Its first part is a survey of prostitution from the ancient world through medieval and modern Europe, country by country, with attention to law and regulation; its second part reports the results of a questionnaire put to two thousand women confined on the island, on their origins, trades, reasons for entering the life, earnings, health and habits, with tables. Sanger argues for medical regulation rather than suppression. The book is an early example of social statistics applied to a subject usually left to moralists.
