The Heroic Age
The Heroic Age, published by Cambridge University Press in 1912, is H. Munro Chadwick's comparative study of the early heroic poetry of the Germanic peoples and of Greece. Chadwick, a Cambridge scholar of Anglo-Saxon, begins with poems such as Beowulf and the stories of the migration period, asking where and when their heroes lived, how the poems came into being, and how far they contain myth, the supernatural or plain fiction. He then applies the same questions to the Homeric poems, and concludes that the two traditions reflect similar societies at similar stages of development, with notes on Celtic and Slavonic heroic poetry. The book became a starting point for later comparative work on oral epic. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
