Hector Munro Chadwick (1870–1947) was an English philologist and historian of early literature. Educated at Clare College, Cambridge, where he spent his whole career, he became Elrington and Bosworth Professor of Anglo-Saxon in 1912 and transformed the subject into a broad study of the languages, history and literature of early Britain and northern Europe. His books include Studies on Anglo-Saxon Institutions, The Origin of the English Nation and The Heroic Age (1912), and, with his wife Nora Kershaw Chadwick, the three-volume comparative study The Growth of Literature. The Cambridge department of Anglo-Saxon, Norse and Celtic grew from his teaching.
