The glories of Mary
The Glories of Mary, first published in Italian in 1750, is Saint Alphonsus Liguori's devotional work on the Virgin Mary, and this edition reproduces the second American edition of 1852, presented as the first complete English translation. The first part is a commentary on the prayer Salve Regina, phrase by phrase, explaining why Christians should trust in Mary as queen of mercy, mother, life, hope and advocate, with examples and stories drawn from the lives of saints. The second part treats her feasts, her sorrows and her virtues, and ends with prayers, a rosary and acclamations. Liguori, a bishop and founder of the Redemptorists, wrote in a warm, persuasive style for ordinary believers. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
