The Fall of Troy

by Quintus Smyrnaeus

Translated by Arthur S. WayAbout 5 h 16 min of reading16 chapters

The Fall of Troy is a Greek epic in fourteen books composed by Quintus of Smyrna, probably in the fourth century AD, to fill the gap between the end of Homer's Iliad and the Odyssey. Beginning after Hector's funeral, it tells of the Amazon queen Penthesilea and the Ethiopian prince Memnon coming to the aid of Troy, the death of Achilles, the contest for his armor and the madness of Ajax, the arrival of Achilles' son Neoptolemus and of Philoctetes with the bow of Heracles, the wooden horse, the sack of the city and the storm that scatters the Greek fleet. Arthur S. Way's 1913 verse translation, made for the Loeb Classical Library, keeps the poem's Homeric manner.
