The excavations at Babylon
The Excavations at Babylon is Robert Koldewey's account of the German dig he directed from 1899, published in German in 1913 and in Agnes S. Johns's translation in 1914. Koldewey walks the reader round the site: the outer walls, the mound of Babil, the Kasr with its Procession Street and the Ishtar Gate faced with enameled bulls and dragons, the temple of Ninmach, the Southern Citadel and its vaulted building, the palace of Nabopolassar, the inner wall, the bridge over the Euphrates, Esagila, the temple of Marduk, the ziggurat Etemenanki, the houses of Merkes and the Greek theater. An appendix prints the descriptions by Herodotus, Diodorus and Strabo, and some 255 plans and photographs accompany the text. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
