The Evolution of Marriage and of the Family
Charles Letourneau, a French anthropologist and professor at the School of Anthropology in Paris, set out in this work to trace marriage and the family from their biological origins to the institutions of civilized societies. He begins with reproduction and pairing among animals, then surveys a wide range of human customs reported by travelers and ethnographers: promiscuity, polyandry, polygamy, marriage by capture and by purchase, and the forms of the family that grew from them. The English edition appeared in 1891 in the Contemporary Science Series edited by Havelock Ellis. Its evolutionary framework and many of its sources are now dated, which makes it a revealing document of nineteenth-century anthropology. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
