The Every Day Book of History and Chronology
Embracing the Anniversaries of Memorable Persons and Events in Every Period and State of the World, from the Creation to the Present Time
The Every Day Book of History and Chronology, published in 1858, is a reference work compiled by Joel Munsell, the Albany printer and antiquary. For each day of the year it lists, in chronological order, the events and the births and deaths that fall on that date, from the consuls of republican Rome and the Spanish era to the news of the 1850s, usually in two or three lines, occasionally at greater length for persons not easily found elsewhere. Munsell's preface explains the trouble of reconciling old and new style dates and of correcting inherited errors. The book is an almanac for browsing and a record of what an educated American of the period thought memorable. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
