The Crowd
A Study of the Popular Mind
The Crowd: A Study of the Popular Mind, published in French in 1895 and in English the following year, is Gustave Le Bon's account of how people behave when they act as a mass. He argues that individuals in a crowd lose their critical judgment and become impulsive, credulous and open to suggestion, swayed by images, slogans and repetition rather than reasoning. He describes the leaders who move crowds, the role of prestige and affirmation, and the ways in which juries, electorates and parliaments behave as crowds of their own. Le Bon's conclusions are pessimistic and his politics conservative, but the book shaped the study of mass psychology and was read closely by politicians and propagandists in the century that followed.
