The Central Eskimo
Sixth Annual Report of the Bureau of Ethnology to the Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution, 1884-1885, Government Printing Office, Washington, 1888, pages 399-670
The Central Eskimo, published in 1888 by the Bureau of Ethnology in Washington, is one of Franz Boas's first major works, based largely on the year he spent on Baffin Island in 1883 and 1884. It begins with the geography of the region and the distribution of the Inuit groups of Baffin Land, Hudson Bay and the coasts to the west, then describes their hunting of seal, walrus and caribou, their boats, sledges, snow houses and tools, their social customs, religious beliefs and festivals, their tales and traditions, and their poetry and music. A glossary of Inuit words and place names completes it. The book marks the beginning of Boas's influence on American anthropology.
