The Canterville Ghost

About 47 min of reading8 chapters

The Canterville Ghost, first published in 1887, is Oscar Wilde's comic ghost story and one of his earliest pieces of fiction. The American minister Hiram B. Otis buys Canterville Chase in spite of warnings that it is haunted, and his family, armed with stain remover and lubricating oil, prove entirely unimpressed by Sir Simon de Canterville, who has been frightening the English aristocracy for three hundred years. The twins pelt him with pillows; the minister offers him Rising Sun Lubricator for his clanking chains. Only the daughter, Virginia, takes the weary ghost seriously, and through her the story turns from farce toward something gentler about forgiveness and rest.
