Poems, with The Ballad of Reading Gaol
This volume brings together the verse of Oscar Wilde, from the Poems of 1881, written in his twenties under the influence of Keats, Swinburne and the Pre-Raphaelites, to The Ballad of Reading Gaol, composed after his release from prison in 1897 and published under the number of his cell. The early poems include Ravenna, the sonnets on Italy and Greece, Requiescat for his dead sister, and the long Charmides. The Ballad is something else: a narrative of a soldier hanged for killing the woman he loved, told by a fellow prisoner, with the refrain that each man kills the thing he loves. It is the only work Wilde finished after his fall. The poems are available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, with the first poems free.
