Lord Arthur Savile's Crime; The Portrait of Mr. W.H., and Other Stories
This volume gathers Oscar Wilde's short fiction in the form Methuen gave it: four stories first printed in magazines in 1887 and collected in 1891, together with "The Portrait of Mr. W. H." of 1889. In "Lord Arthur Savile's Crime" a young man learns from a palmist that he is destined to commit murder and sets about getting it over with before his wedding. "The Canterville Ghost" sends a brash American family to a haunted English manor where the ghost, not the tenants, suffers. "The Sphinx without a Secret" and "The Model Millionaire" are brief, polished anecdotes, and the closing piece spins a theory about the dedicatee of Shakespeare's sonnets into a tale of obsession and forgery.
