Salomé: A Tragedy in One Act

by Oscar Wilde

Translated by Alfred Bruce DouglasAbout 53 min of reading3 chapters

Salome is the one-act tragedy that Oscar Wilde wrote in French in 1891 and that the Lord Chamberlain banned from the London stage because it put biblical characters in a play. This edition presents the English translation by Lord Alfred Douglas, published in 1894 with Aubrey Beardsley's sixteen drawings, which are as famous as the text. On the terrace of Herod's palace, under a moon that every character reads differently, the princess Salome becomes fascinated by the imprisoned prophet Iokanaan and is refused by him; Herod, who cannot stop looking at her, promises her anything if she will dance. The play's incantatory, repeating sentences later gave Richard Strauss his libretto. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the opening pages are free.
