Lady Windermere's Fan
Lady Windermere's Fan, first performed in 1892, was Oscar Wilde's first stage success and the play in which he found the voice of his comedies. Lady Windermere, young, happily married and strict in her morals, learns that her husband has been paying large sums to a Mrs. Erlynne, a woman with a past, and that he insists on inviting her to the birthday ball at which he has given his wife a fan. Convinced of his infidelity, Lady Windermere is ready to run off with Lord Darlington, and only Mrs. Erlynne, who has her own reasons, can save her from the consequences. Around this melodramatic frame Wilde hung the epigrams of the Duchess of Berwick, Lord Darlington and Cecil Graham that audiences remember. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, with the first act free.
