The Book of the National Parks
The Book of the National Parks, published in 1919, was written by Robert Sterling Yard as chief of the educational division of the new National Park Service, and it is both a guide and an argument. Yard groups the parks by the rock that made them, the granite parks of Yosemite, the proposed Roosevelt park, the Rockies, Mount McKinley and Lafayette in Maine; the volcanic parks of Lassen, Mount Rainier, Crater Lake, Yellowstone and Hawaii; and the sedimentary landscapes of Glacier and the Grand Canyon, with notes on the appreciation of scenery between the groups. He wanted Americans to read geology in their scenery and to value the parks as a national asset. Maps and diagrams accompany the chapters. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
