Tagalog Texts with Grammatical Analysis
Tagalog Texts with Grammatical Analysis, published by the University of Illinois in 1917, is the work in which the American linguist Leonard Bloomfield first applied his descriptive method to a language outside Europe. Working with a single speaker, the Filipino student Alfredo Viola Santiago, he recorded some forty texts in phonetic transcription with English translation: folk tales of the monkey and the turtle and of Juan the fool, legends of vampires and sorcerers, accounts of festivals, games and daily life in the Philippines. The second part analyzes the sounds, word formation and syntax of Tagalog on the basis of these texts, and the third is a list of formations and a glossary. It is a landmark of descriptive linguistics. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
