Studies of American Fungi. Mushrooms, Edible, Poisonous, etc.
Studies of American Fungi: Mushrooms, Edible, Poisonous, etc., published in 1900 by George Francis Atkinson, professor of botany at Cornell, was the first American mushroom book to rely on photographs rather than drawings. After chapters on the form and development of the mushroom, Atkinson works through the gill-bearing fungi by spore color, the boletes and other tube-bearing fungi, the hedgehog, coral and trembling fungi, puffballs, morels and the stinkhorns, describing the common species and warning carefully about the deadly Amanitas. Later chapters treat the collection and preservation of specimens, the chemistry and toxicology of mushrooms and recipes for cooking them, and analytical keys and a glossary assist identification. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
