Slang and its analogues past and present, volume 2 [of 7]
Slang and Its Analogues Past and Present is the large historical dictionary of slang compiled by John Stephen Farmer and the poet William Ernest Henley and printed for subscribers in seven volumes between 1890 and 1904. This second volume, issued in 1891, covers the words from C to "Fizzle." Each entry defines the term, identifies the group that used it, from university students and soldiers to thieves, sailors and sportsmen, and gives dated quotations from the sixteenth century to the authors' own day. Many entries add long lists of synonyms and of equivalents in French, German, Italian and other languages, the "analogues" of the title. The book remains a treasury of nonstandard English. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, with the opening pages free.
