Sketches in Bedlam
Sketches in Bedlam appeared in London in 1823, signed only by "a constant observer" and dedicated to the governors of Bethlem Hospital, which had moved from Moorfields to a new building in St. George's Fields eight years before. The first part describes that building, its regulations, night watch, diet, laundry, treatment of patients and medical department, and gives instructions for applying for admission. The second and longer part sketches the cases of some hundred and forty patients, among them Margaret Nicholson, who attacked George III with a knife in 1786, James Hadfield, who fired at him in 1800, and Bannister Truelock, with their histories, delusions and daily conduct.
