Roman Stoicism
being lectures on the history of the Stoic philosophy with special reference to its development within the Roman Empire
Roman Stoicism, published in 1911, is a course of lectures by Edward Vernon Arnold on the history of the Stoic school with particular attention to its development under the Roman Empire. Arnold traces the philosophy from Zeno and Chrysippus through Panaetius and Posidonius to Seneca, Epictetus and Marcus Aurelius, and sets out its logic, its physics, its theology and above all its ethics, the doctrine of living according to nature that so many Roman statesmen and soldiers tried to practice. Closing chapters consider the Stoic influence on Roman law and on early Christianity. It was long the fullest treatment in English and remains a clear, sympathetic guide to a philosophy that has lately found new readers. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
