Reviews
Between 1885 and 1890 Oscar Wilde wrote a steady stream of unsigned reviews, mostly for the Pall Mall Gazette and for The Woman's World, which he edited. Robert Ross collected them in this volume of the 1908 collected edition, choosing, as his introduction explains, to include everything that could be shown to be Wilde's. The subjects are as varied as a reviewer's desk: new novels and minor poets, Ben Jonson, Balzac in translation, Symonds on the Renaissance, a book on dinners and dishes, a handbook to marriage, and productions of Hamlet and Twelfth Night. Wilde is often funny and occasionally severe, and many ideas of his later essays appear here first.
