Psychotherapy
Including the History of the Use of Mental Influence, Directly and Indirectly, in Healing and the Principles for the Application of Energies Derived from the Mind to the Treatment of Disease
Psychotherapy, published in 1912, is James J. Walsh's attempt to write the first general textbook of the subject, grown from lectures he gave at the Fordham University School of Medicine. A long first section traces the use of mental influence in healing from Egypt and Greece through Arabian and medieval medicine to his own day, including astrology, magnetism, amulets, nostrums and faith cures, all read as evidence of suggestion at work. A second section treats the mechanism of mind on body, attention, memory, unconscious cerebration, secondary personality and hypnotism; a third the individual patient's day from morning to leisure hours; and later sections apply the principles organ by organ to the heart, digestion, the nerves and the rest. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
