Psychopathia sexualis: With especial reference to contrary sexual instinct
A medico-legal study
Psychopathia Sexualis is the study of sexual pathology by the German-Austrian psychiatrist Richard von Krafft-Ebing, first published in 1886 and enlarged through many editions. This English translation by Charles Gilbert Chaddock was made from the seventh German edition. Krafft-Ebing surveys the physiology and psychology of the sexual life, then classifies its disorders through hundreds of numbered case histories, introducing the terms sadism and masochism and devoting the longest section to what he calls contrary sexual instinct, the attraction to one's own sex, which he treats as a congenital condition rather than a vice. A final part considers the sexual offenses in the criminal law of Austria and Germany. The book was meant for physicians and lawyers. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
