Popular Education

by Ira Mayhew

For the use of Parents and Teachers, and for Young Persons of Both Sexes

About 9 h 44 min of reading14 chapters

Popular Education, published in 1850, was written by Ira Mayhew at the request of the Michigan legislature after his term as the state's superintendent of public instruction. Addressed to parents, teachers and young people, it sets out what a complete education should be and why a republic cannot do without it. Mayhew begins with the body, giving several chapters to the laws of health, ventilation and respiration, then turns to the training of the senses, the intellect and the moral and religious nature, before arguing for free schools supported by the state as a political necessity. The book is a clear record of the common-school movement in the American Midwest. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
