Plotinos: Complete Works, v. 1

by Plotinus

In Chronological Order, Grouped in Four Periods

Translated by Kenneth Sylvan GuthrieAbout 5 h 28 min of reading427 chapters

This is the first volume of Kenneth Sylvan Guthrie's translation of the complete works of Plotinus, published in 1918. Unlike most editions, which follow the six Enneads as Porphyry arranged them, Guthrie sets the treatises in the order in which Plotinus wrote them, grouped in four periods, and supplies concordances between the two orders. The volume opens with Porphyry's Life of Plotinus, an intimate portrait of the philosopher who seemed ashamed to have a body, together with other ancient biographical notices, and then begins the treatises of the earliest period, on the beautiful, the immortality of the soul, fate, the nature of the One and the descent of the soul into the body. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
