Plain Facts for Old and Young

by John Harvey Kellogg

About 8 h 04 min of reading389 chapters

John Harvey Kellogg, medical superintendent of the Battle Creek Sanitarium in Michigan, wrote Plain Facts for Old and Young as a guide to sex, reproduction and what he called sexual hygiene. Beginning with reproduction in plants and animals and the differences between men and women, he moves on to chastity, marriage and the dangers he attributed to sexual excess and self-abuse, with warnings and prescribed treatments that reflect the moral panic of his age. Many of its medical claims have long been discredited. Today the book is read as a revealing document of nineteenth-century American attitudes to the body and of the health reform movement Kellogg led. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
