John Harvey Kellogg (1852–1943) was an American physician and health reformer. Raised in a Seventh-day Adventist family in Michigan, he trained in medicine and in 1876 became superintendent of the Battle Creek Sanitarium, which he turned into a famous health resort promoting vegetarian diet, exercise, hydrotherapy and abstinence from alcohol and tobacco. With his brother Will Keith Kellogg he developed flaked breakfast cereals, though the brothers later quarreled over the business. He wrote many books on health, including Plain Facts for Old and Young, and was also an active promoter of eugenics, a side of his career now widely criticized.
