Needlework As Art

by Viscountess Marianne Margaret Compton Cust Alford

About 9 h 13 min of reading72 chapters

Needlework as Art, published in 1886 by Lady Marian Alford, founder of the Royal School of Art Needlework, is a history and aesthetic of embroidery from antiquity to the Victorian revival. Alford treats style, design and pattern in turn, distinguishing primitive, naturalistic, symbolical and geometrical ornament, then describes the materials, wool, flax, cotton, gold and silk, and the uses of color. A long chapter on technique covers stitches, white work, gold work, cushion work, plumage work, cut work, lace and tapestry under their medieval Latin names, followed by chapters on hangings, furniture, dress, ecclesiastical embroidery and English embroidery in particular. Plates and cuts illustrate the examples discussed. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
