Mycenæ: a narrative of researches and discoveries at Mycenæ and Tiryns

by Heinrich Schliemann

About 8 h 14 min of reading28 chapters

Mycenae, first published in 1878, is Heinrich Schliemann's account of the excavations he conducted in 1876 at the citadel of Agamemnon. Digging just inside the Lion Gate, he uncovered the circle of shaft graves with their skeletons, gold masks, diadems, inlaid daggers and hundreds of other objects, and announced that he had found the tombs of the Homeric kings. The book describes the work day by day, with plans and more than seven hundred illustrations of the finds, and includes his soundings at Tiryns. The preface is by W. E. Gladstone. Schliemann's dating has been corrected, since the graves are centuries older than any Trojan War, but the discoveries founded the study of Bronze Age Greece.
