Morals and Dogma of the Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite of Freemasonry, published in 1871, is Albert Pike's vast commentary on the thirty-two degrees of the Scottish Rite, written while he was Sovereign Grand Commander of its Southern Jurisdiction. For each degree, from Apprentice to Sublime Prince of the Royal Secret, he supplies a lecture on its moral lessons and symbolism, ranging through Egyptian, Greek, Hebrew and Persian religion, the Kabbalah, Gnosticism, alchemy and the philosophers of every age. Pike admitted that much of the book was compiled from other writers and expected members to read rather than accept it. For decades a copy was given to every new member of the Rite, and it remains the most cited work on Masonic philosophy. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, with the first chapter free.
