Man and Nature; Or, Physical Geography as Modified by Human Action
Man and Nature, first published in 1864, is George Perkins Marsh's study of how human beings have changed the face of the earth. Marsh, a Vermont lawyer, congressman and diplomat who had traveled widely around the Mediterranean, begins with the lands of the old Roman Empire, once fertile and now in many places eroded and barren, and asks how much of that ruin was caused by human action. Chapters follow on the transfer and extermination of plants and animals, on forests, on waters and on sands, with a mass of evidence from Europe and America. His conclusion, that people must learn to restore what they have damaged, made the book a founding text of conservation. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
